Sound in the 'Dome...

4

The sound in the "Brandt" varied depending on where you sat. I got up and wandered around. I found reasonably optimal listening at the back on the main level, behind the soundboard about 100 feet. Many others joined me. It was hard to make out the lyrics, because the guitars and drums were mixed too high. The 'Dome is notoriously hard to mix. I'll bet the best and clearest was at the soundboard.

I had acquired a recording of Bob and the boys reportedly done June 3, 2008 in St Petersburg, Russia. It was essentially the same set list. The fidelity was very good in that I could actually hear what was going on. I might suggest that it be released as a bootleg.

Perhaps the soundboard recordings from this performance might be made available. I would be very willing to purchase one.

It took me a while to grasp and appreciate that I wasn't going to hear things the way I might expect them but would experience something new and different. This was my first time seeing Bob Dylan after listening to him since the early 60's.

The sound could have been better, the seats I had could have been better, etc, etc. but I saw a true musical genius and living legend and it was great!

I loved All Along the Watchtower, unlike an earlier poster. It was a strong, muscular version.

Happy to have seen Bob Dylan. Would I like to see him again with better seats and a better venue? Would I pay more to see him in a smaller venue?Absolutely.

Good Show, Lousy Venue

I took my son to experience Dylan for the first time, and I was deeply disappointed for his sake that the sound was so awful that he couldn't hear any of the words, even as I told him on the way to the concert, "Listen to the words. The words will get into your soul." Well, they might have if he had actually heard them! I wasn't expecting Dylan to say anything to the audience--I know that that's not his thing, and that he's even said explicitly that he doesn't go on stage to get the love of the crowd. That's OK, too--better say nothing than have him act like Spinal Tap on The Simpsons": "We love you...(where the hell are we?)...Springfield!"

What I was sorry about, however, was that some of the brilliant atmosphere of his recent albums was totally absent in a loud wash of guitar-and-drums. I'm not criticising the band--they're an awesomely tight combo, and the lead guiarist and drummer are both outstanding--but what drew me to revive my respect for the 21st-century Bob is that he has allowed himself to experiment with new, sometimes astonishing, sonic textures on "Love and Theft" and Modern Times. Tell Tale Signs has even more interesting sounds, indicating that Bob isn't a 60s has-been and that maybe even some of his best work, musically, is still to come.

But I didn't see that on Saturday. I just heard a lot of noise. By the third number I was even reduced to playing a game of "how soon can I guess the song from the few words I can actually hear." It's too bad. Overall it wasn't a horrible show. I certainly wasn't expecting "Blowin' in the Wind" as one comment has it--but I was hoping for something a little more atmospheric, a little more thought-provoking, a little more varied: in short, I was expecting to be as amazed by the "new" Dylan live as I have been on the last few albums. Better luck next time?

cheers

I agree. Everyone has the right to their opinion; I was responding, however, to a post that I thought was was out of line--not in terms of their objective opinion to the show but the unnecessary rudeness. But you're right. Also, I think you are right on about Dylan even caring that we are all having this dialogue. But we love him so we do. Be well.

Don't Think Twice, It's Alright

First of all, I don't think it's fair for one of the previous posts to say, "Keep your negative opinions to yourself, please." Everyone who attended the concert has the right to an opinion. If they didn't enjoy the show, then so be it. Hopefully they'll know enough to stay home next time. I think it's easy to weed-out who the true fans are from those who were hoping for a greatest hits show which sounds like it does off the CD (yawn). For the rest of us, we know what a privilege it is to attend these shows. I love the anticipation of what's going to be played as the setlists change every night. Not to be disrespectful of Elton John who played Regina in September, but he played the exact same setlist both nights. What a rip-off for those who attended both shows. On the other hand, it's always a surprise when you go to a Dylan concert. No two shows are ever the same. The catalog of songs this band has rehearsed and can draw from each night is astonishing. What might be an obscure song for you; might be an all-time favourite to someone else. It's nice to see people defending Bob's show, but I doubt if he cares. He's playing for himself now and he's got an awesome band backing him up.

thank you, open letter

Okay, so I never attended this show...I did see him a week ago in Vancouver and it was incredible. He played guitar (twice), danced behind his keyboard, he was playful and animated, grinning, and visibly enjoying himself. I was floored.

No, he never really interacted with the crowd (save for the obligatory "thankyou, friends" and band introduction), but when has he? He's Bob Dylan...he doesn't need to please me, you or anyone. Besides, what difference is it if he asks the crowd how they're doing? To someone on the stage, they're speaking to a huge dark mass of faces and shoulders. It should be enough that he's there, allowing everyone to be in his presence.

The disappointed self-proclaimed "fans" who have posted for this show apparently show little appreciation for an artist who has consistently reinvented himself, as any true artist does. For someone to languish in past accomplishments and redo songs verbatim is apathetic and redundant. Dylan challenges himself, and in doing so, forces us to re-evaluate our concept of him and his work.

Admittedly, his voice and musicianship may not be there anymore, yet he pushes on, continuing to tour and make really astounding albums with a band that can play circles around any other. Why? Because he needs to be involved in both creating and recreating. Blood doesn't run through his veins...music does. And if he offers us a brief glimpse into his world, I want to be there. Even if the sound is atrocious, I want to be there. He's given enough of himself over the years...it's the least I can do.

Looking forward to being in the presence of Mr.Dylan again soon...

"if you appreciate the man for his poetry, timeless observations on injustices, connections between people and all the "really real" life offers us, this set was fantastic!"

I'm very happy that someone mentioned this point. I heard a couple people talking negatively about the show while walking through the parking lot and all I could think was "Newport Folk Festival for him all over again", haha. No matter how this man plays his music, it will be amazing. I appreciated this show very much and was very happy to still see him moving around and enjoying playing. Would pay twice as much to see it again.

Outstanding!

This show exceeded all of my expectations. It left me breathless. Thank you Bob for coming to Regina!

How Disrespectful

No Rating

No one has come close to the longevity and talent that Bob Dylan displays. I have seen Dylan handfuls of times and respect the Bob Dylan that he is today. If you are a fan, you would do the same. If you know anything about him it should be that he is constantly evolving as a poet and musician. You should feel extremely lucky to have been a part the show last night and a part of our history. It is astonishing, bewildering, and disappointing that you have been so blatantly rude and disrespectful to this musical genius. Keep your negative opinions to yourself, please. There are millions of people who would have loved your ticket. Be easy. Peace and light.

Excellent Concert by a Legend

I feel that I need to post a comment after reading some negative comments about Bob's show last night. As far as engaging with the fans, shut up, if you hadn't noticed his music was overwhelming"engaging"....Regina seems to be the "Wall Mart City" for musical gigs....., well some people anyways. Too often I have been at gigs only to realize that alot of people in this town want a "poster cut out" of a concert in their mind....( see Elton John, Rolling Stones) I loved both of those gigs as well, but I really think that if your a fan of any musical legend, then you accept him/her for who they are now, not the person they were 40 years ago....Bob is no Neil Young in my humble opinion, but C'mon, how could you be disapointed with that show? What else were you going to do last night? I don't think Rory was at the Casino, was he????

A Couple of Things...

Dylan hasn't played guitar in at least 5 years due to the fact he has Arthritis in his hands. He has never really been the type of artist to "connect" with his audience, he just goes up, plays and is done. Which isn't always a bad thing.

I will however say, that the sound sucked. I couldn't recognize a lot of the songs. Lots of distortion and the band was up too loud, not enough balance. Still though, I thought it was a good show...not what I expected but you never get what you expect when you see Dylan.

The fact that you took your family is admirable

Cleosales on Ebay

Look at it this way: no one can sing and play after about 55 years of doing it. His hands must hurt.

I think that he never was a huge " connecting people person". He doesn't strike me as a talk show host type.

He was a bit arrogant in his youth and brilliant and entertaining and innovative but not a preacher type even though he preached in that ridiculous christian phase.
He wrote good music, he endured, he is brilliant with his writing and lyrics.

He may live another 5-20 years and there will come a day when he can't perform. At least your children were there and in the future you will see that being at one of his concerts was monumental, historic, an event.

Some people have that show biz personality that connects.
He is simply an artist, complex, introverted, lucky that he was prolific, created art, music, and made the harmonica famous in rock and roll.

I think the image is the aloofness, the distracted recluse. Even that eye: that is like to focus the audience so he doesn't have to connect. He is merely the vessel for all of this music.

In my business I connect to the world: everyone thinks I should have a talk show, a reality show or should have been an actress.
But the truth is I am a recluse and don't connect except with a few close friends. People don't move me, I find them tiring and yet in business I am everyone's best friend.
They know and adore me. Some hate me also. I am the electricity, the action , the center of the gossip in business.

The non business me is not so social. Not at all.

I am guessing but I think he may be that way. Not social, shy, reclusive.

Small talk probably doesn't work with him, subjects of interest and intelligence do.

When I do a show : sometimes I am on and it works and sometimes I just want to die and go home: the energy bombs. it can be the weather, the people, my mood: who knows? An off day.

I would guess that with the rigors of his tour life: that not every day is a good day.

In the big picture your kids will be able to say that they were there and that is a great gift.

In the big picture of life: it still is a good memory.
Life goes so quick and none of us get to do enough.
Blessings.

pardon me Bob Dylan,
I am astonished, bewildered and quite frankly disappointed at your performance at the Brandt center in Regina,Saskatchewan, Nov.1,2008.It was to bad you didn't connect with the audience being the legendary Bob Dylan that you are.I took my family with me and I would like my money back, unless you come back and do autogragh 's in person.Enough about being negative, I'll listen to your cd's.You got that Zimmie. A fan.

Disappointed

1

I went to this show tonight and was very disappointed at the performance that was put on by Bob Dylan. I thought for a musician of his calibre that he would have put on a better show. He did nothing to connect with the audience and his "attempt" at singing left a lot to be desired. I was very surprised that he did not once pick up a guitar during the show. He never spoke a word to the audience during his entire set. All Along the Watchtower was so unrecognizable to me that I did not even realize that he had played the song until I had checked the setlist when I came home from the show. I have to admit that I saw Neil Young perform at the same location 2 weeks earlier and his show and performance were much better.

Dylan... the 60s are over but Dylan isn't

For people expecting "Blowin' In the Wind" softly sung to acoustic guitar, this show and this Dylan wasn't it... On the other hand, if you appreciate the man for his poetry, timeless observations on injustices, connections between people and all the "really real" life offers us, this set was fantastic! With many old tunes reworked and edgy along with some newer material, and with his Band in top form, it was great to see a full house of people there aged 17 to 70 (+/- 5) enjoying what the old man has to offer, which is triple what most artists half his age can even aspire to.

Well done, Mr. Dylan... Well done.
