wish I were a rich girl

There's not much to say that hasn't already been said, but I'll say it anyhow, just for the record: This was an amazing show. There was a great selection of songs (i'd never heard "i Believe in You" done live, my personal favorite of the night) & I loved the way the songs were redone in such kingly fashion. That's a wonderful thing about Bob. He's never stale, always new & he just KEEPS ON GETTING BETTER! Amazing, really, when you consider how good he was to start with....

I've never cared too much for money, but after seeing this show I found myself wishing I were a rich girl so I could just follow the show for a while & drink it in each night for a week or two, anyhow. This show left me in no way wanting, just wanting more. Who loves Bob? I do. xx

still rocking

Being my first Dylan concert, I didn't really know what to expect. Sure, he jazzed up the songs. I've just always understood it that certain artists reinvent their sound when they feel like it.. nothing wrong with that.
As to his engaging the audience...maybe you just had to be relatively close, but from where I was I could clearly see that every now and then he would look at people in the front row, and at one point he pointed at someone. I also thought I saw a little bit of dancing...maybe he was just stretching his back? Regardless, I didn't buy tickets to hear him talk...that's what his radio show is for, is it not?
A thoroughly marvelous concert. Love this guy.

the longer view

It is unfortunate that many people who attend a current BobShow have not been presented with opportunities to see the longer view... to develop a perspective that is large enough to embrace the wonder and awe of the mastery that is Bob's alone.

To me, even going back to my first one in 1974 at the old Maple Leaf Gardens it sometimes too limiting. In the time of revealing the criminality of the years of Richard Nixon as an impeachable American President.. to have Bob shear the sound waves and electrify the air with his prophetic "sometimes the president of the United States must have to stand naked" to me gave him permission enough to work his art form as he wishes.

No, I am not always comfortable with all his work... the 02 Nov 2008 show in Winnipeg had waay too much march tempo for me; the Winnipeg Concert Hall show with G.E Smith was too percussive; his album Good As I Been To You creeps me out a times; but his 05 Oct 2001 L&T Tour opener in Spokane presented a riveting Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum; surpassed only by an elevating Subterranean Homesick Blues played with the Dead on 06 Aug 2003 in Columbus Ohio. And it's not all serious... as he shows in his Under The Red Sky choices.

Sooo what am I saying? Have your own opinions... everybody needs that to make sense out of the world. But unless you understand your own shortfall, you will not understand the shortfall of others.

Lovesick

I really loved this show. In fact, I'm having a hard time letting go of it. Feels a lot like being lovesick. Bob is just living, breathing art, isn't he?

I feel sorry for people who go to see him with certain expectations or requirements, and miss the experience of just enjoying what he lays down on the canvas. Always new and raw and real, perfect even in it's imperfection. I always feel like I've been taken somewhere, then set back down on the ground. Only this must have been a really good show because I haven't come down yet. I'm hoping it will last all week : )

This idea that Bob owes us something more than his songs should be let go of. Isn't it enough that he tours constantly to bring us these amazing evenings? Just staying in my own area, I've been able to see him 15 times since 1987, and I've even missed some opportunities. He makes himself available more than anybody I know of, to the people who love him. I think that speaks way more about his regard for us than any words possibly could.

Thanks, Bob, for being true to yourself, and for always reminding me to do the same. Wish I could be there again tonight.

Great Show!!!

I went out last night feeling really privileged and downright happy just to be able to see Bob Dylan one more time. I wasn't expecting too much. The last time I saw him (1988), it didn't look, feel or sound to me like he put anything remotely bordering on effort into his show (the album he had just released wasn't one of his best either for that matter). I was pretty discouraged - felt gipped (especially since I'd seen him put on an amazing show a couple of years earlier with T. Petty & the Heartbreakers). It seemed that night as if playing his songs for us was the last thing on earth he wanted to be doing and he didn't give a shit about how we felt about it.

I've realized since that that's what he's like sometimes. I think he's pretty much going to do or not do what he feels like. Kind of refreshing these days when you think about it.

Anyway, to say the least, last night my expectations were exceeded far beyond the beyond. It was great fun to see and hear him enjoying himself with his band. I was able to decipher his words clearly (far contrary to what I was expecting based on reviews I'd read of his recent shows). Felt to me like he was really blessing us with his best. I even received it personally when I heard him say, "why, thank you friends." - heard since that he was thanking his band - not his audience.

Regardless of who he was thanking, I felt very engaged with last night.

Great show
Thank you Bob

Cleosales on Ebay

I have never had the pleasure of attending one of his concerts. I am impressed by everyone's involvement be it positive or negative:

There are some really well thought out statements and opinions and it is great.

It does seem though that these venues have a difficulty with sound or his people have to do a sound check. I think it is only fair for his people to do a sound check. That is the right and fair thing to do for a huge paying audience.
Maybe he is a little deaf now and can't hear????Who knows?

He is really lucky to have such a vibrant following. And it is fascinating how he keeps his mystique and keeps people talking.

That also is a gift.

yes, i did notice them watching Bob very very closely for changes in the song, etc. the people i noticed watching Bob the most were the bass player and slide guitar guy.

it was quite funny to watch them watching Bob to see what he was going to do next. they all looked like they were quite enjoying themselves on stage.

AWESOME!

This was my fifth Bob show, and it was the best one yet. I love the fact that even the newer songs were so differently arranged. The band is incredible. Did anyone else notice that they all watch Bob very closely in case he decides to change the arrangement mid-song ? Awesome, indeed.

For all the people complaining about his lack of fan interaction, did you not know who you were going to see? have you never heard of this man before? have you never seen any footage of him in concert? did you really expect him to get us to sing the chorus to songs and cue us to clap along?

come on people, wake up.

perhaps next time (hopefully he comes back) all the slackers will stay home.

Agreed: to hell with you.

5

I think you know what you can do with your insincere apologies. You couldn’t offend me if you tried. I enjoyed the show; nothing you say could change that. And you can make up names for him, and boast about your show off collection all you want, but that doesn’t mean a thing if you don’t have the heart, nor the hearing capacity, to hear the man when he’s right in front of you.
Good luck on your “hunt,” you won’t have far to go.

Juke Joint Jam

4

Just wanted to thank the backing band for 'layin' down' a good show in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Some real nice extended jams, where everyone were 'locked into the groove'. Sure some players might be a little ruff around the edges, but that's the way Bob likes it. Nothing too slick. Really hip sound!
Opening with a number - which was played 'with a feel' to sound like something off - ' The Basement Tapes' , featuring The Band, was pretty cool. Actually the whole show was hip. And Bob was cool. Doin' a jig, hear and there, between the keys and the front mike stand. There were only a couple of slower numbers the whole evening. Changing the arrangements, and lyrical intonation, keeps the old numbers -new.
Thanks for coming to Winnipeg, Canada, Bob. Only a few hours north of your old stompin' grounds. Thanks for putting together, and bringin' a good line-up. The crowd (us garage musicians) really dug the show. Rock On.

My Last Word For Lev...

5

Lev, it just seems you're dumping on the whole event just because you didn't get the seats you wanted. That's still YOUR fault. Not Bob's or mine or anyone you consider a poser (I have all his LP's, CD's and DVD's too -- legit. and bootlegs -- so what?). I was in the 19th row on the floor and yes there were people in my way occasionally, but I enjoyed the show nevertheless. The sound was great and the performance was amazing. You say you paid $180 for your ticket and Bob looked like a dot? That's funny because I paid $79.50 for my 19th row floor seat and I could see everything fine! Were your chairs gold-plated or something? You knew where your seats were. Why didn't you bring binoculars? I haven't seen Dylan since 2002, and even I knew in advance he doesn't use the screens. The point is, you're angry your seat was so bad and you're taking it out on the man himself by slinging mud and misquoting him as a fan-hating grouch who's only in it for the money. You know, like everybody else does here, that's a load of shit. If you think owning all the albums gives you the right to a perfect concert even though you and you alone messed up your tickets then maybe just don't go next time. Clearly Bob could never live up to your high expectations unless you get 4th row center so maybe, just maybe, he might see your mustache and become your friend.

To hell with me...

1

Well, I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize to everyone whom I offended. To hell with me for being dissappointed with a show I was looking forward to.

I appreciate the real fans out there informing me that I'm not a fan, even though I own everything that's been released commercially on CD, DVD and most vinyl, and I've referred to him as God Dylan for about twenty years.

It takes a real jerk like me to not sit back and enjoy paying top dollar for tickets and not being able to see anything but a small dot on stage while the technology exists for anyone out there to rent a camera and big screen for a couple of hundred dollars a night. To hell with me for wanting to hear a good mix from one of the biggest music stars of all time.

My sincere apologies for sharing my experience. I will hunt for people who thought the show was awesome and encourage them to post their experiences here. I'd encourage all of you "real" fans to share your views on dozens of other shows where I read people had similar experiences like mine. Those poser fans need to be put in there place.

Crazy mak'em ups Lev:

5

Oh I read your comments about his last show, but we're talking about THIS show, which kicked ass, and you're totally trashing. You're trying to blame Dylan for putting on a crap show, when really you just don't like the MTS Centre and you're a moron who can't use Ticketmaster.
Dylan doesn't hate "fans" he probably just hates jerks like YOU and loves YOUR money, cause you pay for it, but don't get it.
Bite yourself. This site is for fans, get lost.

Friendlier??

5

You're making it like he flipped us all the bird! What did you expect, Bob to become buddies with you because of your mustache?? You're ridiculous!!
And Bob never said he hated his audience but just loved their money. Never.

Everyone in the audience

I guess you didn't read my comments about his last show. If you were sitting anywhere past the last ten rows, you'd see half the crowd texting and catching up on dissapointment. I knew over a dozen people there and everyone thought the sound sucked and didn't have anything positive to say about anything last night.

The song selection is the same old stuff he's been doing for years, the best stuff he did last night was "Ain't Talking" "Nettie Moore" and "Don't Think Twice". I guess I am an ungrateful swine, dropping $180 on a show I could barely make out and or see. I'm sorry to crap on your Dylan experience, I guess the experience is now wrecked for you and believe me, I feel your pain. You'll have to drive to Minneapolis to see him tomorrow for another entertaining show.

Great show!!

Third time seeing Bob and just as enjoyable as the other two. "Blind Willie McTell" was a pleasant surprise and I always enjoy seeing him rock out on "Summer Days". The version of "'Til I Fell In Love With You" was better than the one on Time Out Of Mind!! It was great to see Bob dancing around, playing harp and briefly, guitar! Loved the vintage-looking 50's microphones too! Come back soon, Bob!!

Now on to the cry-babies... Your seat or what you could see had NOTHING to do with Bob or his show. If you blew it getting tickets on the Ticket Master web site then it's YOUR fault, ok? If Bob didn't do the songs YOU wanted, tough shit. And who cares if Bob addresses his audiences? We are there to hear him play his music and that's exactly what he does, practically every night. He doesn't do a cookie-cutter show of greatest hits like MOST guys his age do and to me that's more respectful to real fans than any amount of "Helloooo Winnipeg!!!" or "Great to be here!!" bullshit-lines most acts shout out. Don't even think for a minute Bob hates his audiences... if he did he wouldn't even still be on the road. It's all about the MUSIC. You're there to listen to music. Not watch big-screen TV. If you want a visual experience go to the circus next time it's in town... 'nuff said.

Anyone who would grow a pencil mustache to honour Dylan is a douche...but then again my friend and I did feel sorry for the people who couldn't see Dylan as close as we did. And to the people who sat while I stood, and looked at my ass instead of Bob Dylan, I'm flattered,,,and you're welcome

The only bitter disappointment is your attitude. Dylan has never been a happy go lucky jumpin all over the stage performer! He's not chatty. He goes out and does his thing cause that's what he loves to do. If you want generic "thank you" talk to make yourself feel good, go see someone else.
You said he doesn't "play what the crowd wants to hear" ?!?!? What the hell man? I wanted to hear all of those!! If you were any kind of fan at all, you would have loved every single song he played! Maybe you just don't know anything about Bob Dylan. What did you need to hear? Mr. Tambourine Man? Blowin in the Wind? Ha. There's more to Dylan than that. Since when has he been out to please people anyway? He does this for himself, and allows us to witness it. If he was doing it for any of your basic, needy, commercial reasons, tickets would have been way more than 80 bucks, you ungrateful swine. Something IS happening here and you don’t know what it is, do you, “Mr. LEV?!”

And do us all a favour and do "Enjoy" him from home next time he comes, instead of crapping all over our Dylan experience

Did I grow a pencil moustache for this???

1

I saw God Dylan in Winnipeg in 2002 at the old arena, 4th row floor center and it was the best show, great sound, great tunes and the best part of the show was seeing his facial expressions. We didn’t mind the total coldness towards the crowd because we could see his face and it was the coolest face we’ve ever seen.

As soon as I found out God Dylan was coming back to Winnipeg, I started growing a pencil moustache out of respect to him, I know most people will just wear a Dylan t-shirt but I wanted to go the extra step. Unfortunately, I left the show thinking ‘did I grow a moustache for this’?

Due to a mix up at Ticketmaster locking me of their website without warning because I was refreshing the page too much right when the tickets were about to go on sale, I ended up with center seats on the side and it was the worst show I’ve ever seen, or barely seen. How does Dylan get away with playing large venues and have no video screens so you can actually see him? I understand it can be costly to have a live camera crew doing a fancy production but they could easily set up four video cameras on a tripod and have someone switch the scenes. The best part about a Dylan show is actually seeing Dylan up close and cameras could have provided that experience to everyone.

Another strange thing is the MTS Centre is supposed to have the best sound for an arena. I’m guessing they didn’t bother doing any sound check. The sound was horrible, Dylan needed to be a few dbs louder at least, the only thing you could make out clearly was his harmonica.

I’m sure the people in the first ten rows loved the show, but looking around in the seats I was in, all we saw were people walking around, having conversations and looking pretty bored. I felt bad for the people on the floor who stood up for most of the show, just so they could see a piece of Bob, many just sat down and stared at people’s rear ends for most of the show.

I was so excited about this show but it ended up being a bitter disappointment, I think I enjoyed seeing David Copperfield get mad and use the “J.C.” bomb at a handicapped person a few weeks before more than I did seeing Dylan, and David Copperfield called in that show, big time.

I don’t even know why Dylan is performing live anymore, judging by his interactions with the crowd, he hates the audience, he doesn’t even allow the media to take photos, he doesn’t respond to applause or play what the crowd wants to hear. He said “thank you friends” to his band and I think introduced them although I couldn’t make out a word, and that’s it besides the “lyrics” to his songs. He didn’t even wave goodbye. It was actually an uncomfortable show, I felt bad because I talked my brother in law to come with me. We both felt ripped off, the sound was brutal, instruments were often out of tune, the song selection was predictable of songs that aren’t his best, and there was nothing to see showmanship wise from any further than the first ten rows or so. I’m guessing at the end of the night, Dylan laughs to himself as he didn’t even acknowledge the people that spent their money on him, didn’t do a soundcheck and yet people still keep coming.

That said, “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” was unbelievable. I wish he would have done “Workingman Blues #2” then I wouldn’t have left feeling so ripped off but a person could drive themselves crazy hoping to hear Dylan play their favorite song from his amazing catalogue of music. It would be nice if Dylan would release a DVD of his show so people can see him, it would be a better experience enjoying him from home.

Oh yeah

That drummer messed up a couple of times...I could have done better Bob...think about it

ROW 6!

5

Candy scored us great seats and it rocked my socks! Simple Twist of Fate broke my heart. Desolation Row made me say "Genius", both under my breath and to the person next to me...I don't know if she heard. I wanted to hear the police car in Hwy 61 revisited. My friend said he sang "smoked my eye balls" instead of "eye lids" damn her for having such a good ear. don't think twice it's all right...I won't, it was more than all right! Okay maybe I'll think about that night a few more times. He should've played Tombstone Blues! Oh well at least he didn't play Slow Train or all the tired horses (WTF was that Bob?". I laughed when this prissy 14 year old left in the middle of the concert...yeah that's right get rid of the chaff. "Get out of here you unpatriotic, rotten, doctor, commie rat!"

(2nd) Time Around

5

Great, great show last night! I saw Dylan ten years ago for the Time Out of Mind tour, and it was awesome, but I have expanded my Dylan knowledge much since then, so this was a much more enjoyable show for me. Although everyone has songs they "wished he would have done," myself included, I think with all the material he has to choose from, he gave us a great sampling of his genius work.
We can only hope that he will grace us with his presence yet again. We'll all be there!
Thanks Bob!

Winnipeg, Nov. 2/08

5

Great, great show! Unbelievable set list - I got several songs from my wish list, and although he's reinvented almost every song he's ever done, almost all of them are even better with age. "Simple Twist of Fate" could have been sung by Al Green, the way the band played it.

The sound quality was wonderful, the band is about as tight as a band can be, and the music is timless; it could have been 100 years old, it could have been written yesterday.

I was heartened to see the large numbers of teenagers there. I took my own kids, ages 18 and 16, and although they miss some of the reference points, they were impressed.

AWESOME!!!

5

Wow, what a great show Bob and his band put on last night! I was in awe, thank you boys. I feel so fortunate to be able to experience such a music legend live. I can somewhat agree with ya brucered, but fortunately no one asked me to sit down, that baffles me too. But I have to say that I kind of appreciated the people in front of me sitting cuz I had a better view. I had to go to the back of the sound board to really boogie though (which is why there shouldn't be seats on the floor in the first place), but that is a seperate rant. I just want to say that I have seen Bob and his band five times now and he has not lost any of his charisma over the years. I had chills when he was on the harp and bustin' a groove, and in I Believe in You, and that isn't even one of my favs. Well, lets face it I had chills the whole night. Nice treat to hear a rarity like Blind Willie McTell, which was brilliant. Overall it was an amazing night! Thank-you.

Awesome concert, terrible fans!

5

Great concert from start to finish. He played solidly for 2hrs, with a 3min encore break. The band was super tight and sounded great. Nothing to complain about Bob or his band, but I do have some complaints with the Winnipeg fans. Bob is almost 70, plays night after night, and can stand, play keyboards, harmonica, dance and even played a little guitar tonight. Is it too much to ask for the fans on the floor to give him the respect he derservces and stand, or at least not to yell at other people to "Sit down!". I don't think the yelling was directed at me, as other people were standing in front of me, so there is no way I'm going to stair at someones back when Bob is on stage, or anyone on stage for that matter. I paid good money for floor seats and to be as close as possible to the front, I don't care if you want me standing or not, I'm going to stand. And please, put away your cellphones, stop texting and having a yelling conversation with the person beside you. I just don't get it. Don't people understand that Living Legends don't stroll through Winnipeg every day.

Again, the concert was amazing and it was great to have Bob back in Winnipeg. He put on an amazing show, and wouldn't not think twice about going again if he was here next week.

The surprised standouts of the night for me were "I Believe in you" and "Blind Willie McTell". AWESOME!!!

Thank you very much Bob and your band.
